Tunstall Girl

It was seeing Harriet Cole and her Burleigh inspired works that made me realise of the work of my local of the 6 towns Tunstall start Clarice Cliff. This amazing woman and designer challenged all traditional boundaries of pottery and she could be a good visual illustrator i could use to implicate that of Harriet Cole’s methodology.

So i produced some images based on her style but also trying to capture some of the things i believe to be Stoke Culture.

The Walking Man:

Everybody for some reason in Stoke know of the man with the huge trench coat that just seems always to be walking. You’ll spot him time to time and there is this almost remarkable shock when you discover other people know his existence but know nothing about him- i adore this correlation with community and pottery he could be a great story for the ceramic capsule.

Sonny

Sonny (Milton Eustace Hughes) was born in the West Indies. His father thought England to be a better way of life for his son, and encouraged Sonny to move there with his Uncle and Auntie. Sonny wore a suit for his travels, but the boat journey was so long that the white collar on his shirt had turned black by time he set foot on English shores. When he got to Stoke, he was dumbfounded by the weather. He had never seen snow, or smoke coming from chimneys. He thought that the kilns, which were covered in snow, were igloos, and so Sonny thought he may have come to the wrong country. As he was used to the West Indies heat, he was frightened that the chimney smoke was also coming from his mouth. It was here where he starred in so many stories that are worth drawing. This is just the start of Sonny’s legacy.

Smelly Farm

A grumpy farmer on the way to Packmoor Primary school. Sets her Geese on children and sits there with wheat in her mouth…this is a genuinely existing person
